Why I Started Side Hustling in College

“I didn’t hustle for luxury—I hustled for survival, for freedom, and for a future I could shape myself.”

🎓 The Reality Behind the Hustle

College wasn’t just about lectures and exams—it was about survival.

My parents weren’t financially prepared to send me to college, especially not to one of the most well-known schools in our city, where the tuition fees were high and the pressure even higher. I took up BS Industrial Engineering, a course that demanded not just time and effort, but also money for projects, materials, and printing—expenses that piled up fast.

There were times when my parents had to go to the finance section of the school to submit promissory notes, just so I could take my exams. Thankfully, the school allowed me to proceed with exams as long as the promissory note was accepted. But the stress of knowing that my education was always hanging by a thread pushed me to find ways to help.

🧃 My First Hustle: Selling Juice

I didn’t have a mobile cart. I had a stationary setup, selling fruit juice in a fixed spot. It wasn’t flashy, but it was mine. Every cup I sold was a step toward independence. I wasn’t just selling juice—I was selling effort, grit, and the hope that I could help ease the burden on my family.

📈 Exploring New Paths

From juice, I ventured into:

  • Network marketing: chasing commissions and learning sales the hard way
  • Affiliate marketing: trying to earn online with zero budget
  • YouTube: uploading videos with no gear, just grit

Each hustle taught me something—even when it didn’t earn much.

📚 The Balancing Act

College requirements were intense—thesis deadlines, exams, group projects.
There were times I had to pause my hustles just to survive academically.

But even during those pauses, the fire never went out. I knew I’d return to it.

💡 Why It Mattered

Side hustling in college gave me:

  • Confidence to try new things
  • Skills I couldn’t learn in a classroom
  • A sense of ownership over my future

It wasn’t easy. But it was real. And it laid the foundation for everything I’ve done since.

📝 Final Thoughts

If you’re a student thinking about starting a side hustle, here’s my advice:

  • Start small. Start now.
  • Don’t wait for perfect conditions.
  • Learn as you go.
  • And most importantly—hustle with purpose, not just profit.

Because sometimes, the smallest hustle can spark the biggest change.
